My sewer is backed up, what do I do?

If it just won't go down and no neighbors are having problems, it could be a problem in your line and you may want to call a private sewer line company. If it is actually backing up more than what should be in your line, or if neighbors are having similar problems, it could be the City or Sanitary District line and you should contact us. Our normal office number is 431-2288 between 7:00 & 3:30. If it is after hours or on weekends or holidays, the 911 Communications Center has our Pager and other phone numbers to contact someone. We will check out the problem as quickly as possible. We respond 24 Hours/365 Days

What is that sinkhole in my yard?

If it is not related to your water line it could be your sewer line. Check your property records to determine if there are any easements for public sewers running across your property. It could be a failure of some type. If you think it may be our line, give us a call and we'll check it out.

My sewer line is broke, who has to fix it?

Private sewer laterals are the responsibility of the property owner all the way INTO the public sewer. Even if it is broke in the right-of-way, the property owner is responsible for the repair and all associated costs. In some cases, this includes street and/or alley repairs. All taps and lines must be repaired by the property owner in accordance with all laws and codes. Permits are required and bonds must be provided for any construction work within the right-of-way. Contact the City Inspections dept. at 431-2332.

I smell sewage but don't see any, what do I do?

Check all of your drains, especially your floor drains if you have them. Sometimes they dry up and allow odor through, just pour some water in them.

The catch basin in front of my house is covered up?

If you are able, please try to remove the debris plugging it. There are several thousand catch basins throughout the City. As good citizens, we need to take ownership of the ones in our area and help keep them clean from debris. With your assistance, water can flow freely, if this does not correct it or no one is able give us a call.
