I'm a downtown business or organization
Great! Just stay open between 5-8 on the first Friday. It would also help if you let us know that you will be open and if you are providing an activity so we can better market you. If you need help coming up with an activity or want connected with an artist/performer then let us know and we'd be happy to connect you.
I'm an artist/musician/performer/lecturer
Awesome! You're more than welcome to perform downtown as long as you are not disturbing other performers. If you want us to connect you to an organization or business downtown to host you we'd also be happy to help, just let us know.
I'm a business/organization outside of downtown
You're more than welcome to participate. Let us know that you'll be there and we can allocate you a spot for a booth. While not required, please try and make your booth interactive as we love seeing more activities for First Friday!
About First Fridays
What is First Friday?
First Friday is monthly event the first Friday of every month. Businesses stay open and typically participate by offering a simple activity (crafts, open mic, speaker, movie, hosting an artist’s work, sale, etc.) or participation in a theme (serving chili on chili night, meet with Santa at Christmas, murder mystery clue on Halloween, etc.) or simply stay open past their regular hours.
Why do a First Friday?
First Friday brings people together and promotes downtown businesses. While we have an existing successful event in Summer Sounds few businesses stay open and the event appeals to a limited demographic. First Friday will diversify the available activities creating a wider audience. By complimenting Summer Sounds and creating a larger event once per month we can more reasonably expect small businesses to stay open. First Friday will bring together a diverse community, allow for social interaction, and support our local small businesses.
What other Cities do First Friday?
Small and large cities across the county have created these kinds of events including Urbana, Decatur, Bloomington, Peoria, Aurora, Rockford, Terre Haute, Mt Vernon, Batavia, and Carbondale.
What is the City’s Role?
These events are led by the individual businesses and institutions that participate but the City still has a role to play. The City will help establish the themes (with public input), invite businesses to participate, support the businesses, promote the event (via social media, radio, and print media), provide maps based on the existing downtown map, facilitate putting any interested artists/musicians/performers in businesses that want them, and (if possible) facilitate activities that fit the theme (find a Santa at Christmas, provide a fog machine on the Halloween event, provide games for game night, etc).
What are the Downtown Businesses/Organizations Roles?
This event is led by the individual businesses who participate by staying open or providing an activity. Any business that stays open will be promoted through the First Friday marketing materials. If a business or organization needs help coming up with an activity or wants to connect with an artist or performer the City can facilitate that.
What About Everyone Else?
This event is for the entire community, not just downtown. Any business or institution outside of downtown can set up a booth. Similarly, any artist/musician/performer can participate. The point is to generate the most activity downtown to bring the largest number of people possible to the center of our community and bring people together. While some individual venues may charge admission, the overall event is free.
