NPDES PERmits

POLLUTION PREVENTION & STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PERMITS
Stormwater is the runoff that occurs when rain water falls onto impervious surfaces like roads, roofs, driveways, and parking lots. The rain water (and everything else it picked up along the way) drains directly to our lake, creeks and river without being treated at a wastewater treatment plant or other facility. If there is pollution on the ground, the water will become polluted, and stay that way! The storm drain system is separate from the sanitary sewer system.
Under the Federal Clean Water Act, Danville is required to have a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit to discharge stormwater into waterways. This permit, called a Phase II (for small municipalities) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit, is issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Since our stormwater flows directly to ditches and streams without any treatment, all residents play an important role in working together to keep our water clean. Together, we can prevent polluted runoff!
